WALKING IN LYCIA

The Lycian Way is Turkey s first long distance footpath, researched by Kate Clow. Over 500 kilometres of fine walking along the south coast between Antalya and Fethiye. The combination of coastal and mountainous sceneries makes the Lycian Way, according to the Sunday Times 'One of the 10 best walks in the world'.

TREKKING LEVEL
Walking up to 8 hours the day with some steep and narrow paths, some days have long sunny sections.
The optional climb up MT.Olympos has some light scrambling.

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Pension

Day 2: Goynuk Valley                             
6 hours - 800m ascent

We trek on an ancient path up the valley of the Göynük stream, crossing the water and climbing through pine forests. We picnic at the side of the stream, and there is chance to refresh in the crystal clear water. Meet the bus at the summer pasture of Göynük, and short transfer to Gedelme Village.

Day 3: Gedelme to Yayla Kuzdere
5-6 hours - highest point 1150m

From the ruins of the Genoese Castle we head through the mighty pine forest towards Mt.Olympos. After about 1.5 hours we reach the height of 1150m where the cedar and juniper trees start. This trek gives us a great opportunity to explore the endemic richness of flora at this altitude. At the end of the day we can have our well earned tea in an authentic village house.

Day 5: Free Time in Cirali and Olympos                          

The tired walkers’ legs can rest on the wonderful beach or explore the ruins of the ancient Olympos.
Your guide can organise a short night walk up to the eternal flames of Cirali (Yanartas).
Lunch and dinner are at your expenses today.

Day 6: Musa Dağı (Mt Moses) Pass                      
6-7 hours - 650m ascent - 650m decent

We walk directly through the ruins and the necropolis of the ancient site of Olympos, which was one of the most important cities in the Lycian Union. We follow an old track under strawberry trees to the hidden city on top of Musa Dag ( Mt. Moses 650m). We picnic on the mountain plateau, and descend on an old camel path through forest to the village and bay of Adrasan.

Day 4: Tahtalı Dağı (Mt Olympos) Pass                  
7-8 hours -1100m ascent - 1100m descent (pass)
Pass: 1950m Optional Summit 2365m

We start walking at Yayla Kuzdere, a small village settled high on the side of Mount Olympos . Trek up zigzags near a stream bed, with marvellous views of cedar forest. We have a picnic lunch on the pass, in the shadow of giant cedar trees. The descent to the village of Beycik goes through a fairytale forest and offers great views of the coast. At the village teahouse of Beycik we meet the bus. The group can also choose to go up the summit , then of course the day starts earlier an finishes later.

Day 7: Adrasan – Gelidonya Lighthouse
6-7 hours – 450m up – 250m down

The first one hour of the day starts with an uphill out of the village, once we reach the top, great views are waiting for us.
The trek continues undulating through pine forest with views of Susuz ada (Waterless Island) and descends to the famous Lighthouse of Gelidonya. Here we have a big rest and enjoy the unique panorama. From the Lighthouse to the car it’s just a 45min stroll down the hill.
